AFT Michigan Report

The Michigan House passed a terrible piece of anti-union legislation aimed straight at school employees today, by a 55-53 vote. It will be a serious fight to stop it in the Senate, so I wanted to share the statement I put out to the media below and personally ask you to call your State Senator and ask them to oppose HB 4929.

Statement of David Hecker, AFT Michigan President, on the passage of HB 4929

Today's passage of HB 4929 is a shameful attempt to silence the voice of working people in our state. Making it illegal for school districts to utilize the modern technology of payroll deduction for union dues and fair share fees does absolutely nothing to improve education, it is simply harassment of the women and men who educate our children.

Educators democratically elect unions to engage in collective bargaining and strengthen our collective voice. We democratically set our own dues, and each individual can choose whether to be a full member or a "fair share" payer. Just as with the United Way and other worthy causes, payroll deduction is a technical procedure that helps keep educators focused on student learning.

Our legislators should be focused on improving our schools and creating good jobs, not silencing the voices of Michigan workers.
